MQ1D at this year's Hampton Court Concours of Excellence
This year’s Hampton Court Concours of Excellence was held over a three-day period and, as in previous years, we have had the pleasure and honour to support our partners Export 56 again at this prestigious event.
This year we prepared four show cars for Export 56, all dating from the 1950’s to the 1960’s some of which are extremely rare.
As we are part of the team that regularly look after these beautiful classics, when we came to preparing them for shows, we collaborate with the owners and Export 56 to decide what is required, this results in us developing bespoke Concours detailing packages for each car.
The first Porches that was at this year’s concours is this outstanding example of a 1951 356 Split Window Coupe, which has some very interesting history behind it. This special Porsche was once owned by Sir Donald Campbell, the one-time world land speed record holder.
In 1957, the French Porsche works racing driver Claude Storez ordered a lightweight Speedster from Zagato in Italy based on the 356. The streamlined body was created using the patented Superleggera process from aluminum sheets over a tubular mesh. Storez drove the 356 Zagato Speedster with some success in the 1958 sports car season.
Alongside this was a 1960 Porsche 356 Zagato Coupe ‘Sanction Lost’, first presented by Export 56 at the 2020 Concours of Elegance.
This amazing Porsche Zagato, (Reg 409 XVR) is one of only nine coupes that were built by Zagato, making this particular car an incredibly rare, unique and special model.
Also shown at this year’s concourse was this 1954 Porsche 356 Pre-A (Reg WXY 3) which is a sports car that was built by the German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH (1950- 1965).
It was Porsche’s first production automobile. The 356 is a lightweight and nimble-handling, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door that is available both in hardtop coupé and open configurations. Porsche built approximately 50 of these cars.
The 2 litre Carrera was the fastest road 356 ever built with a quoted top speed of 125mph. Actual sales began in April 1962 after being announced at the Frankfurt Show in September 1961 and the first Porsche with disc brakes. The 2.0 Carrera used a variant of the Type 547 engine with a larger bore and stoke, having 1966cc.
This extremely rare 1963 Porsche 356BT6 Carrera 2, (Reg 292NOJ) which was only one of two Right hand drive examples and the fastest 356 production model ever produced, was also on show at this year’s Hampton Court Concourse of Excellence
